The day we celebrate the special citizens in our midst

Most people are not aware of this special day but it is a day set-aside to put a smile on the young faces of our senior citizens . The first sunday after labor day is the D-day. Grannies would love our gift - items like flowers, cookies and chocolate . They would also appreciate if we can take them out to the Arenate center for exercise .

The day we celebrate the special citizens in our midst

The day to celebrate the senior citizens in our midst

In the early seventies ,one thoughtful lady realized that some people no- longer cared for their grand-parents as it used to . The name of the lady is Marian Macquade. She observed that grand-kids are so far-away from their grandparents that they no longer drink from the pot of wisdom and heritage .In-order to punctuate this colossal waste of wisdom and knowledge, she started grandparents day .This is a day set aside for people to adopt a grandparent and visit an elderly home to put smiles on the young faces of our senior citizens .It was only in the year 1978 that president Jimmy Carter made it a national holiday .If there was an out-cry in the seventies about the neglect of our grandparents ,then this days Marian Maquade could be turning in her graves. Many other countries has realized the need for this holiday and countries like Italy ,France and Australia also celebrate this holiday .In the united states of America where the holiday was born ,it is celebrated on the first sunday after labors day .This year's event fail on the 9th of September .

there are different ways of celebrating this holiday but all of them are aimed at making the day special for our grandparents .They can be given gift items like chocolate and cookies . Grannies also like flowers, so their day could be flowered with a bouquet of flower like sunflower .Most importantly ,if it won't be easy to take their grandchildren to them ,a scrapbook of family pictures could do the magic. This would help refresh their memories and could bring out a drop of tear or two which signifies joy .

Moreover ,they could be entertained with jokes of past event .My grandmother would always laugh when reminded of the first time she watched a wrestling match in a small black and white television. She burst out shouting that we allowed two small boys to be fighting in a box without making attempts to separate them .Also you can give them books to read ,books like "You don't like grandmother and Grandfathers are gold ".

Most grandparents are always complaining of pain especially waist- pains and arthritis .We can also use this opportunity to return the favor they gave to use and activate their blessing by giving them pain killers and vitamins to strengthen their bones. Also they could be taking out for exercise at the Arenate center to stretch their legs.Another important thing is that they can be given a gift of yeast products to maintain their eyesight .
